This new feature makes your iPhone and iPad even safer, here’s how you can activate it
Apple has rolled out its new iOS 11.4.1 update to iPhone and iPad devices with a new USB Restricted Mode to help make them more secure.
The USB Restricted Mode prevents USB accessories from connecting with your iPhone or iPad if the device has been locked for more than one hour.
This comes as a reaction to the recent reports of third-party devices which harvested data from iOS devices via the Lightning port, even when locked.
The deice in question is a law enforcement GrayBox which is designed to remove data by this method.
However, this security hole could represent anyone gaining access to your iPhone or iPad data, theoretically.
Thanks to Apple's commitment to privacy for its users, this hole has been plugged with the iOS 11.4.1 update and its new USB Restricted Mode. Here's how to use it.
Turn on USB Restricted Mode on your iPhone or iPad
Firstly you'll need to navigate to Settings and open this.
Next, select Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
Then, enter the device's passcode to gain access.
Now, tap the switch next to USB Accessories under Allow Access When Locked. This should put it in the white Off position.
USB Restricted Mode is now activated.
If you want to turn this off, to allow for third-party data access via your Lightning port, then toggle this to the green On mode. But remember you are no longer as secure.
While this can offer a little more privacy and security for peace of mind, it's not full-proof.
According to the makers of the GrayBox, this new USB Restricted Mode can't stop them gaining access.
However, it's in their interests to claim this – but there is yet to be any evidence to back up that claim.
Apple has also released a beta version of its still upcoming iOS 12 for those wishing to try it early.
This offers lots of new features like Group FaceTime, fun Memojis, Screen Time tracking and plenty more.
